Environment, People and Conflict

Thematic training for peace and conflict work

Language: English

The 4-day trainingis offered to practitioners of peace and conflict work, as well as those who intend to work in the field.

The connections between environment and conflict have become more and more visible within the past years. With climate change as a threat multiplier that puts additional pressure on already fragile governance structures, or ecosystems that are essential for the livelihoods of people, the need to understand and address these connections have become immanent. In this training we practice a comprehensive and systematic approach to analyze the interlinkages of environment and conflict, including it into existing programs for sustainable impact.

  • Explain the interlink / interdependence between the environment, people and conflict
  • Gain the ability to conduct a systems-based environmental peace conflict analysis
  • Deliver programming support based on such an analysis that addresses environmental impacts, conflict and fragility together
  • Design a peace program that mainstreams environmental issues
  • Identify tools and methods that are applicable in their own work / conflict settings.

Key Concepts

  • Key Concepts and definitions
  • Interdependence between the environment, people and conflict
  • Mapping environmental vulnerabilities and conflict drivers
  • Mapping drivers for resilience, peace and social cohesion
  • Finding leverage in the conflict, environmental vulnerability system
  • Integration in peace programming

The training will be practical, participatory and experience-based; the insights, existing skills and knowledge of both the facilitator and the participants will form an integral part of the process. It will be grounded in the principles of adult learning. The tools and methodologies used in the workshop will be practiced and applied to conflict contexts and projects the participants suggest and are familiar with (or that are their own contexts). Participants will be encouraged to adapt and change the tools to make them their own.

After a successful participation, participants receive a certificate and become part of the academy’s alumni network.

Please register for this training online via our website by 28 January 2024. We will then contact you for the next steps.
