Development Worker (m/f/d) for Primary Teacher Training Colleges in Malawi (Blantyre or Lilongwe)

Job description

GIZ’s Basic Education programme in Malawi (BEP) aims at improving the quality of education at Malawi’s primary schools. The programme focuses on initial primary teacher education. This involves both, the implementation of the revised and practice-oriented curriculum for initial teacher education and the support to Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) in achieving quality standards of teaching and learning. BEP cooperates closely with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, their implementing partners and eight public Teacher Training Colleges.

Development workers (m/f/d) are based at the decentral level. They support TTCs in improving their quality standards, implementing the curriculum, continuously improving partnerships with the Teaching Practice Schools and improving the use of ICT (information-communication technology) in teaching and learning.

Your tasks

  •  A close co-working relationship exists with a national staff member at the site; each decentralised team will relate closely with the other decentralised team and the central team
  • Participate in the professional exchange with the BEP-team; participate in monitoring, evaluation and reporting measures

Support the TTCs in:

  • The process of self-evaluation against agreed national standards related to quality education and in developing subsequent improvement plans
  • The process of receiving and reflecting external evaluation against national standards
  • The implementation of the revised Initial Primary Teacher Education (IPTE) curriculum – including practice orientation, reflective learning, innovative, inclusive teaching approaches and improvement of the quality of the TTC assessment
  • Support college lecturers to reflect on and improve their teaching through capacity development (professionalization) initiatives

Your profile

  • Qualification as teacher or (Master’s) Degree in education or related studies
  • Several years of experience in school teaching (standard 1-8) and/or formal teacher’s training
  • Involvement in teacher education programs/-initiatives; experience in developing training courses
  • Knowledgeable in advising education-/partner institutions
  • Experienced in coaching / delivery of teaching
  • Working experiences outside Europe would be an advantage
  • Structured and organized in work planning and results‘ monitoring; experienced in report writing
  • Autonomous co-worker with a team spirit; conscious of the role of an adviser and culturally sensitive to other contexts
  • Fluency in English language

Location information

  • Place of residence: Blantyre or Lilongwe
  • Climate: The location is situated above 1,000 m above sea level. Malawi has three seasons: hodry, rainy and dry-cold. It is generally a pleasant climate because of the altitude
  • Healthcare: There are public hospitals and private clinics in the major cities. General health care facilities are available, tertiary and specialised care is limited. In the event of grave sickness or injury medical evacuation (generally to South Africa) would be necessary.
  • Shopping and supply options: In the major cities the supply is good (as imported from South Africa).
  • Accessibility: The main highway M1 reaches Kasungu, Lilongwe and Blantyre. Internet and (mobile) phone networks are in general available
  • Children, young children: Organised activities are available for young children in Lilongwe
  • School situation and fees: The post is suitable for families with children of school-going age in Lilongwe
  • Safety: The security in Malawi is classified “green”; security rules and advices need to be respected strictly. No particular security concerns have been reported for the last months although the usual vigilance relevant to Malawi applies


Travel to meetings of the BEP programme team (in Lilongwe) on a monthly basis is necessary. The position implies regular travel to four TTCs in the Southern region / respectively Central and Northern region. The adviser must have a driver’s license.

It is expected that the adviser takes leave at times that suit the TTCs and this is likely to be in college/school holidays.
